#PimpMyBio--Kara Reynolds

Hello! Thanks for considering me as a potential mentee for Pitch Wars 2016. I'm Kara, and I'm the author of RESET, a Young Adult speculative novel. It's a mainly contemporary setting, with a light sci-fi element: The main character, Lia, can recognize when the universe resets itself, giving her a do-over at life. The flip side of this gift? She can't control when it happens.

About the Novel: I had a lot of fun writing RESET. It's my first YA manuscript; my previous MSs were New Adult and Women's Fiction, but agents told me multiple times that my voice was too young for those categories. Writing YA has really seemed to fit my voice, and I'm happy I decided to give it a try.

The idea for RESET came from the song Immortals, by Fall Out Boy. (It's the theme for Big Hero 6, which my kids love, so... I hear this song a lot.) I started thinking about what it would be like to experience life over and over again with your mind, but not your body, and to do it all alone on top of that. Lia was born from that sense of tiredness. She's exhausted, yet resilient and hopeful.

One of my CPs said that she liked that Lia knows about the resetting before the start of the novel; it's not a power she discovers over the course of the story. At the beginning of the novel, Lia thinks she already knows everything about resetting... an assumption that will prove costly.

If you like: feeling that any character could be harmed at any time, main characters who have to make tough choices, and antagonists whose reasoning will almost persuade you to take their side, then I think you'll enjoy RESET.

About Me: I am a weekly contributor to the writing blog Operation Awesome. In fact, the main reason this personal blog gets so neglected is because all my blogging time goes to OA. I run a feature for OA called Tuesday Museday where I give away query critiques a few times a month. The online writing community is amazing, and I love giving back to it. I'm sure a few of the people I've done critiques for are entering Pitch Wars--I hope to see some of them chosen as mentees!

I love many nerdy things; you'll see glimpses of that throughout RESET. I have a Master's degree in Genetic Counseling. I don't work as a counselor, however; I am a stay-at-home mom of three (two boys and a girl, in that order) which is frankly exhausting and wonderful. Exhausterful. I don't drink alcohol, but I will occasionally hide from my kids in the bathroom with a glass of Coca-Cola.

The coolest thing I've done lately is audition for JEOPARDY!. Being on the show has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid (a very nerdy little kid, TBH), and the thought that any time in the next 18 months I could get called to LA to be on the show... well, it's pretty amazing. And scary. Scamazing.

My other lifelong dream is to be a published author, and I hope being selected for Pitch Wars will help me get closer to that dream. I'm ready to work. Bring it on!

Many thanks to Lana Pattinson for hosting PimpMyBio!

Genetic counseling has always struck me as an interesting job. Did you see that another author's story is about a geneticist? #210 - Julie Clark. Good luck in the contest!
